Due to considerable differences in free corrosion potential, underground pipelines in the immediate vicinity of reinforced concrete foundations are subject to a far greater risk of corrosion than normal cathodically protected pipelines.

Industrial facilities often consist of intricately complex structures, and LCP can reduce the risk of corrosion without having to electrically isolate the objects. Corrosion protection is achieved by applying a general protective current (basic protection). In particularly high-risk areas where sufficiently negative potentials cannot be achieved, single anodes are used (Hot Spot technique).
