SALM Buoys

We are here to service your SALM Buoys. Single Anchor Leg Mooring (SALM) Buoys are marine terminals connected to the seabed via a single chain leg with the fluid swivel located on the ocean floor. A tanker moored to the buoy provides the means to import or export oil and refined products. These systems serve storage facilities, refineries, petrochemical plants, and power plants worldwide. Our valued clients depend on SOFEC Aftermarket Services, with some systems in service for more than 40 years, to maintain reliable transfer of crude oil, kerosene, jet fuel, heavy fuel oil, and other products critical to the industry.

Industry Highlights

  • United States: Developed a chain assembly quickly adjustable to site-specific water depths with no heavy lift equipment required to deploy or re-deploy the systems for multiple water depths.
  • United States: Designed, supplied, and supervised the installation of the first SALM system in the Gulf of Mexico to provide Crude Oil for the United States strategic oil reserves. The system has been in service for almost 40 years.
  • Japan: Designed, constructed, delivered, and supervised the installation of the first SALM terminal for a strategic crude oil storage facility located approximately two miles offshore Mutsu. The system has been in service for almost 40 years.
  • Denmark: Designed and delivered a SALM to operate in ice-laden and shallow water to import fuel, diesel, and mogas, employing a dual sink/float 10-inch hose system intended to be submerged and secured on the seabed when not in use.
  • Malaysia: The Tembungo SALM terminal was the flagship of SOFEC SALMs. This was SOFEC’s first deep-water marine terminal. When initially installed, Tembungo was the world’s deepest SPM of any type in the world.
